Oshida

おし田

At Oshida in Taito Ward's Ryusen district, traditional Japanese sweets take the shape of rustic, firm-skinned inaka manju and tender white-skin buns, both filled with lightly sweetened coarse red bean paste.

01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Tucked into the Ryusen neighborhood of Taito Ward, Oshida focuses on two classic steamed buns: rustic inaka manju with a sturdy wheat-flour dough, and soft, delicate shiro manju made with pale, tender wrappers. The inaka variety stands out for its firm, pleasantly chewy skin, preserving the honest, unpolished character of traditional handmade confections. Many customers order both to contrast the toothsome texture of the rustic skin against the plush, moist finish of the white bun.

Inside, the buns are generously filled with tsubuan (coarse red bean paste) that highlights the natural grain and flavor of the azuki beans. Subtly sweet with a faint touch of salt, the filling finishes cleanly without lingering heaviness, making it just as suitable for an afternoon walking snack as it is for a satisfying bite between errands. If your timing is right, you might even receive them warm, fresh from the steamer.

The shop sits within easy walking distance of local landmarks such as Tobifudoson and Otori Shrine, making it a natural stop while exploring the shitamachi backstreets. Business hours run Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 to 18:30, with doors closed on Sundays and Mondays. Neither transit IC cards nor PayPay are accepted.
